Elective Surgery

Spay and Neuter

Spaying and neutering are safe surgical operations that prevent animals from reproducing.

Spaying is the removal of a female's ovaries and uterus. Neutering is the removal of the male's testicles.

Declaw

The procedure is done under general anesthetic and involves the removal of the kitten's front claws and the surrounding tissue it retracts into. This surgery is most commonly done at the time of the spay or neuter which is between 5-6 months of age.

All declaw surgeries in our hospital are performed with a Laser, which helps to reduce blood loss, swelling and post-operative pain. It also helps to reduce the risk of infection and many cats experience a faster return to normal activities.

We pay special attention to pain management for this procedure. Analgesics are given before, during and after declawing. A Transdermal Fentanyl Patch is applied to all of our declaw patients for continuous pain relief.

Soft Tissue Surgery

The most common soft tissue surgery performed at our hospital is the removal of masses or lumps on pets. Most of these, once removed and tested, are benign (non-harmful); however, occasionally they are more serious. Early removal and accurate diagnosis of a lump is necessary to improve the outcome in your pet if the mass is cancerous.

Some other examples of soft tissue surgery performed at our hospital are bladder surgery and intestinal surgery.

Orthopedic Surgery

Leg fractures are the most common orthopedic problem presented at our hospital. Surgery usually consists of pinning and wiring fractures.

Another common orthopedic surgery is to repair the torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Laser Surgery

Our practice is pleased to offer the benefits of laser surgery to our patients.

As the laser passes through tissue, it seals off blood vessels, lymphatics, and nerve endings. This results in less bleeding during the surgical procedure, as well as less swelling, and, most importantly, less pain for the patient post-surgically.

Recovery times are often shortened when laser surgery is performed.

Intravenous Fluid Therapy (IV Fluids)

All patients undergoing general anesthesia at our hospital are given intravenous fluid therapy.

Having an intravenous catheter placed, allows us to have an access for both the intravenous anesthetics and fluids. The catheter is also available as an access for any other drugs that the pet might require during or after the surgery.

The fluids maintain the hydration and circulation of the patient during the procedure, and help to speed recovery from the anesthetic by helping to flush the drugs out of the pet's circulation.
