Bordetella
Vaccination
Bordetella bronchiseptica is a bacteria that is
involved in the Canine Cough Complex, also known as Kennel Cough. It is just one of
the many disease causing agents that can lead to a cough in dogs. This particular
bacteria can led to pneumonia in a dog, often after a virus has invaded the dog's
respiratory tract. Dogs who have contact with other dogs can be at risk to contract
this disease, so it is strongly recommended for dogs who will be going to dog classes,
grooming salons, dog shows or kennels. Protection against Bordetella consists of an
initial vaccination given at 8 weeks of age or older, followed by a booster given two to
four weeks after. The vaccine is then given annually.
